Biodiversity Net Gain

Enhancing Nature, Supporting Development

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an essential consideration in modern planning and development.

From February 2024, all major developments will be legally required to demonstrate a 10% net gain in biodiversity, with smaller sites following from April 2024. This ensures that new developments contribute positively to the environment by leaving biodiversity in a better state than before.

At Quantock Ecology, we provide expert BNG assessments and reporting to help you meet planning requirements efficiently and cost-effectively. Our team works alongside developers, architects, planners, and local authorities to ensure your project complies with the latest regulations while maintaining smooth project progression.

Our BNG Services

📅 BNG calculations can be complex and vary based on project scope. While we work hard to meet deadlines, we advise early engagement to prevent delays in planning approval.

1. BNG Baseline Assessment (Phase 1)

A BNG Baseline Assessment is the first step in understanding the biodiversity value of your site before development proposals are finalised. This assessment includes:

  • Site Condition Assessment – Evaluating the current ecological state of your site.
  • Baseline Mapping – Identifying habitats, hedgerows, and watercourses using the latest survey techniques.
  • BNG Calculation Tool – Determining your site’s biodiversity unit value based on national guidelines.
  • Preliminary Recommendations – Identifying key habitats for retention and early-stage enhancement suggestions.

💡 We highly recommend undertaking your BNG Baseline Assessment alongside an Ecological Appraisal to streamline costs and ensure a more efficient planning process.

2. Full BNG Assessment (Phase 2)

Once your development plans are finalised, a Full BNG Assessment will be required to demonstrate compliance with statutory biodiversity metrics. This process includes:

  • Post-Development Mapping – Assessing how biodiversity will be affected post-construction.
  • BNG Calculation & Reporting – Providing a detailed BNG metric demonstrating net gain achievements.
  • Management & Monitoring Plan – Outlining how biodiversity enhancements will be maintained long-term.
  • Local Planning Authority Checklists – Ensuring all requirements are met for planning submission.

📝 Our quotations cover the entire survey, calculation, and reporting process, with minor amendments included to accommodate ongoing project adjustments.
